His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has been conferred an honorary doctorate degree in law by the South Bank University of London.
During a graduation ceremony held here yesterday, to mark the graduation of 700 students, the university awarded Dr Sheikh Sultan the honorary degree in recognition of his efforts in the pursuit of knowledge and for his support to education and culture, which made Sharjah the centre of education and culture, not only in the UAE but in the Gulf and the Arab world in general.
Dr Sheikh Sultan obtained his degree in Agriculture Engineering from the Cairo University in 1971, got his PhD in History from the University of Exester in 1985 and went on to obtain his second PhD in Geo-politics from the Durham University in the United Kingdom.
He personally oversaw the setting up of a model University City in Sharjah in 1998 and is now the Chancellor of the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah.
His support for education, culture, history and scientific research cannot be overemphasized, said Dr. Ruth Verrol, representative of the Deputy Director of the University, reading a short note about the Ruler’s biography, which includes his academic achievements and good works.
Having been decorated with the doctorate, Dr Sheikh Sultan, in a short address of acceptance, thanked the university and expressed profound gratitude to all members of the teaching and administrative staff of the university.
He wished the university more success and greater achievements in its efforts to serve the interest of mankind in general.
Dr Sheikh Sultan, meanwhile, visited the university to familiarize himself with its activities. Dr Sheikh Sultan, who is also the chancellor of the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah, was warmly received by the Director of the university and the deans of the faculties.
He commended the university for its high standard of education and research. Ways to boost academic ties and cooperation in research, holding of conferences and seminars between universities were discussed.
